World & U.S. History: U.S.S. Yorktown @ Battle of Midway

- World War II Review Sheet. Due Wednesday, March 30 for periods 4 & 6. Due Thursday, March 31 for period 1.
- We watched a very short video about the pilot of the Enola Gay who flew the mission during which the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. See the video below.
- We then discussed the key events of World War II and students recorded the chart in their notes. Here's what we discussed:
- Road to War: Europe--Hitler's demands and the Allies' appeasement. Pacific--Japanese expansion
- Start of War: Europe--Invasion of Poland. Pacific--Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
- Turning Point: Europe--D-Day and Stalingrad. Pacific--Battle of Midway
- End of War: Europe--Berlin destroyed. Pacific--Atomic bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki

- Began taking notes on the road to war in the Pacific with Japan.

- Labeled map of the pacific theater of the war. Be sure to get a map from me if you were absent.
- Period 6 ONLY: Homework is to color the European map. Color the Axis powers one color and the Allied countries another color. I will be checking it at the beginning of class on Tuesday.

- Today we had a substitute since I was off campus doing an observation of another teacher. Students watched two videos. One was about the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the other was about the mastermind behind the bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer.

- Discussed the human side of World War II through an introduction to the flagraisers on Iwo Jima.
- Watched Norah Jones' American Anthem video above, with scenes from Ken Burns' The War.
- Began work on the World War II review sheet. The test for period 2 will be on Friday, February 18th. For period 3 it will be on Thursday, February 17th.

U.S. History for Wednesday & Thursday, February 9 & 10
- Watched a couple of portions from The War about Okinawa, the atomic bomb, and the end of the war.
- Read an article written by a survivor of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
- Made a chart with reasons why the U.S. should have dropped the atomic bombs and why the U.S. shouldn't have dropped the atomic bombs.
- Wrote a paragraph answering the question, "Do you think the U.S. made the right decision in choosing to drop atomic bombs on Japan? Why or why not?"
